Currituck Beach
Sound Fun Fact:
When this lighthouse was illuminated for the first time on Dec. 1, 1875, it completed the chain of lights
along the North Carolina coast by filling in a previously dark 80-mile gap.
Bodie Island

In 1872, a flock of geese flew into the light, breaking glass panes and damaging the lens. Today, the
lighthouse is part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.
Cape Hatteras
Sound Fun Fact:
The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is the tallest brick lighthouse in America with 268 steps inside to the top.
It warns travelers of the area known as the "Graveyard of the Atlantic." This lighthouse was moved to
its current location in 1999 to protect the structure from the encroaching ocean.
Ocracoke

Ocracoke Lighthouse is the oldest active lighthouse in North Carolina. It is located in the fishing village
of Ocracoke Island, and functions like a street lamp, turning on at night and off in the morning.
Cape Lookout

Overlooking the treacherous 10-mile Lookout Shoals, the Cape Lookout Lighthouse is part of the
Cape Lookout National Seashore.
Bald Head
Fun Fact: Nicknamed "Old Baldy," the lighthouse was built about a mile from the ocean.

During the Civil War, the lighthouse was attacked by both Union and Confederate forces.Over the years, three different Cape Hatteras Lighthouses have existed. The current lighthouse is actually the second structure. In 1936, it was so threatened by sea erosion that it was replaced by a steel skeleton tower in nearby Buxton Woods. The erosion reversed by 1950, however, so the tall brick lighthouse was reactivated.
The Ocracoke Lighthouse is the oldest active lighthouse in North Carolina. The current 76- foot-tall Ocracoke Lighthouse, located in the fishing village of Ocrocoke on Ocracoke Island, replaced the first Lighthouse which was a 55-foot-high, wooden structure. The original lighthouse was struck by lightning in 1818 and burned down. The 1823 lighthouse was controlled by both northern and southern troops during the Civil War.
On a nice day the ride from Currituck Light to Ocracoke Light is about 125 Miles, and one ferry ride from Hatteras dock to south dock on North Carolina's ferries stationed At Hatteras Inlet. Along the way stop in and see the Bodie Island Light. You can also take a ferry ride to Ceder Island. Head south to Cape Lookout, hop a boat ride at Harkers Island and spend the day at the lighthouses swimming, boating, etc. While in Frisco village stop in at Island Choppers and say hello. Pick Up a quart of oil, a t-shirt or maybe Some rain gear for one of those Liquid sunshine days
